Assessment 1: Portfolio

As part of the module assessment, students are required to submit a comprehensive portfolio that consolidates both written report and presentation developed throughout the activities. The written report, which accounts for 30% of the overall module grade, and a group presentation, which accounts for 20%. This portfolio serves as an integrated reflection of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired during the EnABLE activities. It encompasses the key deliverables a written report and a group presentation demonstrating a holistic understanding of the design, manufacture, and testing processes, as well as the underlying theoretical frameworks. The assessment criteria and weighting for each component are detailed below.
A report is required, demonstrating a clear understanding of the theoretical concepts explored during the second and fourth EnABLE activities, as well as detailing the design, manufacture, and testing processes undertaken during the project. The submission comprises of a group-authored section and up to 250 words as an individual reflective log. The group component will receive a shared mark, while the individual reflective log will be assessed independently. Final grades for the report will also be subject to peer assessment moderation.
A presentation is required, demonstrating a clear understanding of the theoretical concepts explored during the first and third EnABLE activities, along with a detailed account of the design, manufacture, and testing processes carried out during the project. The presentation will be delivered as a group and assessed collectively. Final grades will be subject to peer assessment moderation.

Assessment 3: Project Work

Group Project – to construct and test an electronic circuit or system on proto-board, strip-board and Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Group size typically 3-4 students.Group report with equal contribution from all group members to be submitted.

Project Work

Explore how engineering ideas evolve from concept to prototype through a blend of digital design and hands-on problem solving. This module introduces you to the fundamentals of interdisciplinary engineering practice, combining creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Through a series of structured, project-based activities, you will engage in real-world challenges that develop your understanding of the engineering design process. You will also build foundational skills in interpreting and producing technical drawings, as well as prototyping and testing basic electrical circuits.
Working individually and in teams, you’ll develop confidence in applying design principles, communicating technical ideas, and progressing from initial concepts to working solutions. By the end of the module, you will have gained practical insight into the thinking, processes, and teamwork that underpin effective engineering design in professional contexts.
