This module provides you with the opportunity to consider the values underpinning costume design alongside textile and construction practices. In this Major Project you will identify ways to transform the associated industries, exploring their craft, design processes and new technologies, and will interrogate new paradigms of practice associated with technological, theoretical and design contexts and the processes of creation in costume and textile design.
 
You will undertake a comprehensive research project of your own choice to critically engage with emerging issues that will affect the future of costume and textile practices and material innovation. Your research will look for opportunities to facilitate positive change, creating alternative sustainable textiles, new surface products or experiences, all within the broad contexts of costume. This may include new material developments founded on advanced resources in constructed textiles, embroidery and digital/analogue print, and/or advanced 3D technologies, and surface manipulation.

be able to systematically appraise and demonstrate how textiles and material knowledge is advanced through research and development to produce original outcomes.

be able to evaluate and apply a comprehensive range of visual, oral and written media to test, analyse and critically appraise and explain design proposals and to communicate ideas and information in a sophisticated and appropriate professional manner.

be able to conceptualise and initiate new costume and/or textile ideas showing understanding of sustainable and ethical textile practices and originality in the application of subject knowledge to produce comprehensive designs which satisfy the objectives of the brief in a highly resolved manner.
