<p>In this module you’ll study a range of neurodevelopmental conditions and intellectual disabilities (learning disabilities). You’ll build on your knowledge of neurodevelopmental conditions in year 2 to understand the context of learning disability in children and adults. You&#39;ll critically apply current approaches to assessment, differential diagnosis, intervention and management of service-users across the lifespan, including the impact of individual and environmental factors and the use of inclusive communication practices and eating drinking and swallowing. This module equips you with the knowledge of alternative communication approaches and the role of the Speech and Language Therapist in advocating for service-users. You’ll understand the roles of the Speech and Language Therapist and multidisciplinary teams to enable person-centred approaches.  </p>

Compulsory for eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

be able to analyse and evaluate the impact of a person’s speech, language, communication and swallowing needs on their participation and wellbeing in everyday life and collaboratively construct a holistic management plan led by service-users.

be able to critically identify assessment and intervention approaches for a service-user living with a specific neurodevelopmental condition to determine rationale for next-step management.

be able to identify and examine the emotional and psychological impact of speech, language and communication on service-users and their families and carers.

be able to critically identify aetiological features of neurodevelopmental conditions, learning disabilities and SLCNs.

be able to critically review aetiological factors in the presentation of speech, language, communication and eating drinking and swallowing needs, associated with neurodevelopmental conditions.

be able to critically appraise different speech language and communication intervention and management approaches in relation to neurodevelopmental conditions.
