Assessment 2: Exam

Apprentices will undertake a written examination on the range of Key Stage 3 and 4 mathematics topics, using it to complete a subject-knowledge audit.

Apprentices will submit an in progress version of their e-portfolio for review by a module tutor.

Assessment 3: Oral presentation/assessment

The subject-knowledge audit will form the basis of a professional discussion with a module tutor to create plans for the further development of subject-knowledge.

Apprentices will compile an annotated portfolio that provides evidence of developing subject content and pedagogical knowledge, including a range of examples at Key Stages 3 and 4, accompanied by a written reflection on subject-knowledge development.

<p>Expert subject knowledge is the foundational tool of mathematics teaching. Teacher subject knowledge is the key factor in high quality teaching and in raising the attainment of students. Well-developed subject knowledge enables teachers to better evaluate the thinking behind student responses and non-standard methods, identify potential misconceptions and choose appropriate interventions based these interpretations. This module provides a focused approach to developing subject knowledge in KS3 and KS4 mathematics. It focuses on the foundational knowledge required to teach mathematics at secondary level, but also encourages a deeper exploration of the concepts teachers will need to master for advanced problem-solving and clear mathematical reasoning. You will develop the ability to analyse mathematical concepts, identify underlying principles and understand the interconnectedness of topics. You will be able to address and explore common misconceptions, ensuring you develop a robust knowledge base to analyse and answer complex student questions.</p>

Be able to explain the link between mathematical subject-knowledge and the development of subject-specialist learning in the classroom. 

Be able to plan the development of own subject specialist knowledge in relation to curriculum requirements. 

Examine existing assumptions about the importance of mathematical knowledge in teaching.

Draw on relevant insights into the development of curricular knowledge in mathematics.

Adopt an inquiry based approach to the development of mathematical knowledge and practice.
