Assessment 1: Quizzes / polls

Students will complete a formative assessment consisting of questions at the end of each week. After attempting the questions, they will receive immediate feedback with the correct answers and explanations. This process helps students identify knowledge gaps and reinforces learning before moving on to more advanced topics.

Assessment 1: In-Class Test

Two online in-Class tests, covering code programming concepts, code reading and evaluation. Both tests are weighted equally (20% of the total). The first test covers core programming concepts, while the second covers object-oriented programming concepts.

Assessment 2: Portfolio

Working individually, produce a portfolio that consists of a collection of coding tasks for solving stand-alone small problems as well as implementing parts of a larger software system. A typical deliverable consists of both source code and evidence of testing and evaluation. Portfolio consists of two sub-components weighted equally (30% of the total), with the first covering procedural programming and the second covering object-oriented programming.

<p>This module aims to introduce you to fundamental programming concepts, using a programming language that is widely adopted for data analytic workflows. In the first part of this module, you will gain knowledge in core programming elements and constructs, followed by an introduction to programming packages and modules that are designed for basic data processing and analytic tasks.</p>

Computing and Information Systems

The minimum criteria for admission are GCSE English Language or Literature at grade 4 or above and Maths at grade 5 or above, or grade C and B respectively if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme; or have 3 years work experience in a professional role with significant data/ numerical requirements.

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements, the following are accepted:
- The Duolingo English test, with a score of 105 or above.
- An updated experience statement to also include ‘work’: Where you have studied in an English-speaking country, worked for an English-speaking company, or have a UK degree - this proof is accepted within two years of passing as meeting the English Language requirements.
- IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or an equivalent qualification.

Programming for Data Science

Implement, test, and debug computer programs using procedural and object-oriented languages.

Identify suitable algorithms and data structures for solving practical problems.

Apply fundamental programming concepts to create programmatical solutions to problems.

Describe the core programming concepts and structures underpinning modern software development.

Write documentation and software with reference to the standards of the chosen technologies (e.g., design documentation, annotated program listings, test strategies, and actual test results).

Recognise the concept of correctness and verification and validation in testing computer programs.
