Assessment 1: Oral presentation/assessment

Formative assessment is ongoing and will take place through tutor and peer support in workshops. Students are expected to lead and participate in discussions that will take place in seminars.

Assessment 3: Project Work

Students are expected to submit a final project that will involve a media production (written or audiovisual) which will present and analyse a current/past event or a concept incorporating theoretical knowledge acquired through the year.

Assessment 1: Portfolio

Students are expected to produce written response papers on the reading material and submit a portfolio of 8 papers at the end of the first semester. These response papers will each consist of 500 words and are expected to contain academic references.

Assessment 2: Written Assignment

Students are expected to submit a written or audiovisual media production project proposal that will include the subject, synopsis, planning and schedule. 

Project Proposal

This module introduces you to key theoretical approaches to the study of the interplay of technology, industry, users and media products, and more broadly to the study of media and forms of mediated communication in society and culture. The module also allows you to engage with practical uses of media theories. These are significant for a range of professional practices across the creative, media and journalism industries.

Produce media content on theoretical issues related to the media industry.

Demonstrate an appreciation of the theories of knowledge in mediated communication and their analysis 

Discuss and develop theoretical argumentation and analysis on media content, technologies, industries and users  

Produce accessible media content analysing present/past topical events using theoretical knowledge

Articulate an understanding of key methodological approaches to social and textual research 

Learn how different social and individual social/cultural/economic characteristics play a role in media production and consumption
