Assessment 1: In-Class Test

Formative assessment will be comprised of a scenario based multi choice online test covering each of the procurement methods, their advantages, disadvantages and typical implementations. Feedback will be given on this test to indicate strengths and weaknesses to inform study for the summative coursework assignment.

Exam. An examination consisting of theoretical and scenario-based questions. The duration of the examination will be 2 hours and will be carried out under the University regulations.

<p>Advice on construction procurement and contract administration is a major responsibility that comes under the job profile of Quantity Surveyors. At the same time, procurement systems and contractual arrangements often have major influences over the strategies used to design and manage a given construction project.  As such, it is important that the future Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors and Construction Project Managers have a deep insight of various construction procurement systems and standard form of contracts (JCT and NEC forms of contracts). Accordingly, this module introduces the principal types of procurement systems and associated standard form of contracts used in the UK construction market and internationally. In addition, it explores the fundamental procedures related to construction contract administration using the commonly used standard form of contracts.</p>

Evaluate the broader legal, economic and social context, within which construction disputes arise. 

Discuss substantive law applicable for various dispute resolution arrangements in construction and their influence on professional practice within the industry.

Apply relevant principles of law to a range of construction dispute related problem scenarios and provide logical solutions  

Grasps of various procurement systems, their relative advantages and disadvantages and the decision making tools, including PAC and PAM. Evaluate Standard Forms of Contracts (eg JCT, NEC, FIDIC variants) and various documents forming construction contracts and appraise the lines of contractual relationships and communication between various parties

Inquire clients’ requirements and project priorities. 

Conceptualise contract clauses and selectively apply procedures for making interim payments, valuing variations, granting extensions of time and claiming for loss and expense
