Synopsis

In Design and Realisation you will develop a portfolio of work which explores design concepts, visual media, shape, proportion, colour and fabric selection, supported by two-dimensional and three-dimensional construction processes, to create unique fashion clothing.

Learning Strategy

The module will be taught through a combination of individual and collaborative methods including lectures, supervised and unsupervised practical studio-based sessions, demonstrations, tutorials, critiques, independent study, peer group discussion and self-evaluation. Optional visits including exhibitions, art galleries, trade fairs and other cultural events may be encouraged to enrich project work … For more content click the Read More button below.

Outline Syllabus

Explorative project work encompassing primary and secondary research, design, trend, and styling directives. The work of designers, design-led companies and practitioners will be reviewed and discussed in relation to set projects. The development and suitability of design concepts, fabric, colour, and silhouette will be considered and translated in line with … For more content click the Read More button below. Design and Realisation will comprise: Fundamental principles of fashion design including shape, proportion, colour and textureDevelopment of media, presentation and fashion illustrative processesDevelopment of sampling and manipulation techniques including fabric sourcing and selection, building knowledge of material properties, application, performance and limitations.Creative approaches to pattern cutting including the generation of patterns from basic blocks using manipulation techniques to interpret concepts and design conclusions, demonstrating consideration to proportion, line and contemporary styling.Translation of concepts and design conclusions through pattern manipulation techniques including flat production patterns with consideration to use of proportion, line and contemporary styling.creative approaches to garment construction techniques, stitch and seam classifications and sewing solutions relevant to the construction of basic samples, toiles and garments.Sampling, manipulation and garment realisation including fabric sourcing, selection. The construction of toiles and garments to further develop knowledge of sewing, fabric properties, stitch classifications, application and performance including sewing problems and solutions, fabric type and limitations. Professional practice and industry awareness will be developed through specific project briefs. Where possible, live industry and/or competition briefs will be integrated into the module. You will be encouraged to consider sustainability, ethics, and/or diversity through creative development and technical applications.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will
1.
be able to demonstrate independence and awareness of visual research leading to cohesive design development that considers the needs and constraints of specific markets.
2.
be able to evidence use of a comprehensive range of media including CAD to record visual stimuli in an individual and sensitive manner relevant to fashion design.
3.
be able to demonstrate the use of proportion, line and contemporary styling through the translation of individual design concepts to pattern manipulation techniques, flat production patterns and supporting material which utilise accurate measurements.
4.
be able to demonstrate extended awareness of the use of specialist machinery and suitability of materials by completing toiles, garments and supporting material which identify the appropriateness of stitch types and seam finish for specific purposes and also negotiate solutions.
5.
be able to manage individual conceptual and practical tasks in a timely, professional manner which identify personal strengths and needs; express ideas, opinions and criticisms verbally and present work to a foundation level relevant to industry practice.
6.
be able to communicate, analyse and evaluate creative and innovative research through a variety of forms for effective application to creative practice.
7.
be able to demonstrate initiative and awareness of personal and professional skills and the articulation of ideas and information within a fashion context, through independent and collaborative practice and reflection, review and evaluation.

Formative Assessment
