Peer, Self and Supervisor assessment of effectiveness as a team player

This module is a group and individual project where students will choose a process and then design a plant to carry out that process.  Guided by their supervisor, each group will make an initial choice of a suitable process problem, and then synthesise a process to address this problem.  The group will do material and energy balances calculations to support this process synthesis.  The group will then divide the process into sections, and each student will design in detail a different section of the process, including chemical engineering design, analysis of safety issues, and devising a control strategy.  The group will then draw together the results of the individual design work to create a final report making a recommendation about addressing the initial process problem.  In addition to improving their skills and knowledge of chemical engineering design, students will gain experience of working effectively in a team and improve their ability to present technical material in extended written reports and orally.

critically evaluate the sustainability of the chosen whole process, considering process economics, safety and environmental issues, in order to present a business case;

apply and interrelate core chemical engineering principles in order to design plant items and whole processes, taking account of uncertainty, complexity and limitations; 

present orally and in writing the process design, design assumptions, decisions and approaches.

demonstrate effective teamwork, communication and time management skills in the context of a group design task;

critically assess potential process options and justify the choice of design option for the chosen broad process.
