Synopsis
The module will highlight the concepts, philosophy and ethos of using research to provide evidence of best practice. Students will be offered projects related to the research of the academic staff and/or of local optometry practitioners working in collaboration with staff on a variety of optometry related disciplines.

Students will design their research study, obtain their own data and provide their own interpretations to generate a discussion of their results and present conclusions. This will be submitted in the form of a dissertation. In addition, students will present their work using an oral format.
Learning Strategy
Students will work closely with a designated supervisor (academic staff, optometry practitioner) to carry out research projects. This will help prepare them for future careers in optometry practice, industry or academia. Thematic analysis of qualitative and/or quantitative data.Project design.Data collection, analysis and presentation.Presentation methods.Ethical considerations: ethics of research, Good Clinical Practice.Health and safety issues.Project management: collection of data, analysis of the results.Complete a research study and submit a dissertation and present an oral communication.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will

be able to recognise the contribution research makes to the development of knowledge.

be able to identify the components and issues involved with a research project, including ethical considerations, critically review of literature, research methodologies and interpretation of the results.

be able to plan and carry out a research programme which will rigorously test a hypothesis.

be able to demonstrate self-direction and the ability to work in an independent and self-motivated way towards the conclusion of a research project.

be able to critically interpret results, draw appropriate conclusions and highlight limitations in relation to the project context.

Assessment Criteria
