Taught material will contribute an element every week to the SAIL programme (Score As I Learn) submitted via the VLE platform. 11 x 15 minutes weekly assignments. Each assignment will be worth 3%. Taking the best 8 out of 11 scores.

<p>This module provides you with an introduction to business, finance, marketing, engineering management and design for manufacture (DFM) in the context of electronic product design and manufacturing. It is intended to promote an understanding of the lifecycle process of product design and develop the skills you will require as a professional engineer. There is considerable emphasis on the development of team skills and your ability to develop as a team player will be tested by a range of team roles and responsibilities. Problem Based Learning (PBL) techniques are used extensively to confront groups with a series of related problems or scenarios. These, together with a given set of learning outcomes for each session, form the starting point for agreed self study tasks. Consideration is given to how a business could be set up to manufacture and sell an appropriately modified version of the original design for profit. You will be introduced to engineering design concepts including DFM, quality and reliability, product design specification and environmental/sustainability issues.</p>

Discuss the impact on business operations of regulatory and legal considerations including; Contractual, Personnel, Environmental, Health & Safety, Risk and Ethical issues.

Work in a group taking on the roles of chairperson, scribe and group member as required to research and analyse the problems presented, setting, achieving and reviewing objectives.

Engage in reflective practice and professional/personal development activities.

Explain how a product design specification is influenced by market analyses, user requirements, technical issues, quality requirements, financial constraints and the requirement to promote sustainable development.

Evaluate business structures, methods for raising capital, production methodologies and management techniques appropriate for success in the context of engineering design and production.

Work as an effective team member to generate and present a solution to an engineering challenge.

Compile and present a coherent Business Plan that demonstrates a creative approach to the integration and application of the above knowledge and understanding outcomes as appropriate.
