Taught material will contribute an element every week to the SAIL programme (Score As I Learn) submitted via the VLE platform. 11 x 15 minutes weekly assignments (quizzes). Each assignment (quiz) will be worth 3%. Taking the best 8 out of 11 scores.

You will be summatively assessed by Coursework, with a written assignment covering all MLOs. This assessment will be 3000 words count length,  and worth 76% of the module marks. You will receive individual digital feedback with marks and comments for your coursework. 
 

<p>In this module, you will acquire fundamental knowledge of finite element analysis and modelling methods and how to apply this knowledge to the solution of civil engineering structural problems. The arguments and contents include finite element theory, analysis of beams and trusses, columns, assemblages of these structural elements, and structural safety. Also elastic analysis, problems of plane strain, plane stress use, testing and validation of finite element software packages and extensions to apply this knowledge to problems encountered in civil engineering practice. You will have an insight into the principles at the basis of the FE elements available in commercial FE software, knowledge of element types, knowledge of the use of finite element methods for solving problems in civil engineering applications.</p>

Applied Numerical Methods for Civil Engineers

Apply the concepts and principles in numerical approximation in well-defined contexts beyond those in which they were first studied, showing the ability to evaluate critically the appropriateness of different tools and techniques;

Ability to evaluate critically the appropriateness of different numerical tools and techniques, taking into consideration the technical uncertainty and the constraints due to environmental, health and safety, and risk assessment factors.

Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the well-established principles within a wide range of numerical methods;



Demonstrate the capability to use a range of established techniques and a reasonable level of skill in calculation and manipulation to solve problems in structural engineering;
