Assessment 1: Written practice exercise

Students will be required to produce a report applying theoretical approaches to leadership to a hypothetical emergency scenario. Feedback will be given to students on their reports.

Assessment 1: Portfolio

Students will work on a portfolio throughout their progression on the module. The portfolio will be structured and will require them to identify and demonstrate how newly acquired knowledge from the module can be applied to real-world response scenarios.

Assessment 2: Practical Skills Assessment

The practical exercise towards the end of the module will test how well students respond to simulated emergency scenarios requiring leadership input. The exercise will present students with a number of scenarios and students will be required.

Practical Skills Assessment

This module introduces various dimensions including principles and practices of the management of emergencies at a national and international level as well as providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively respond to emergencies and disasters. Students will examine how different management techniques may be applied to various aspects of incidents and covers the management of disasters, security threats and natural hazards. The module also investigates disaster management response to emerging security threats like cyber-attacks and terrorism. Students will explore the importance of a multiagency response and joint planning with their benefits and problems in terms of control and primacy of responsibility as well as the management of various stakeholders. The module further examines the operational aspects of emergency response and focusing on incident command systems, coordination mechanisms, and logistics management. Students explore the roles and responsibilities of various agencies and organisations involved in response efforts. The critical role of leadership in effectively managing and coordinating emergency response efforts, leadership models, leadership styles, minimisation techniques, competencies essential for leading multidisciplinary teams in dynamic and high-stress environments and skills that can be applied during incidents and crises as well as evaluation of the challenges for leadership and decision making under pressure and uncertainty and within the restrictions of command-and-control practices as well as the importance of teamwork and strategic communication are also explored. Students will gain an understanding of how to effectively lead and develop people within diverse environments. The module also delves into the interface between command structures and strategic crisis management arrangements. Students will explore the principles, processes, and challenges associated with coordinating and aligning operational-level command structures with strategic-level crisis management frameworks. Historic incidents of disasters as well as complex emergencies are critically examined in the module.
