This module provides the opportunity to develop the theoretical knowledge of systematic searching, critical appraisal and synthesis of published research which you will apply to the final project on a global public health topic of your choice. You&#39;ll study topics in relation to search strategies, online sources of knowledge, critical analysis and appraisal, policy evaluation, publication planning as well as quantitative and qualitative data collection and synthesis methods. Your leadership and management  public health project will be either a literature review using a systematic approach, change/situational analysis; empirical study or practice/service audit or service evaluation.  You&#39;ll also critically review the literature and synthesise the work of different authors in order to draw new conclusions, taking into account your judgement of the strength of the evidence they produce.  You&#39;ll develop the ability to construct a draft peer review article suitable for publication.

Management and Leadership Public Health Project

Carry out this project to professional standards in relation to both competence and ethical considerations.

Report on the project in a format appropriate to the nature and aims of the research and the intended audience.

Critically review and identify an area commensurate with leadership and management within public health that requires further development and/or investigation appraising its implications for public health practice.

Based on a research or project protocol, synthesise work of different authors in order to draw conclusions.


Put into practice, modifying and defending as appropriate, a specified design for a project.

Critically review and evaluate the research literature retrieved following a systematic search.

Formulate a valid research question and design a small scale research study proposal relevant to public health.
