This module critically reviews person-centred approaches and how health and social care leadership can support service improvement for the frail individual. You will explore the relationship between comorbidity, polypharmacy and ageing. As well as frailty identification and its legal and ethical perspectives.
Frailty is not only a recognised expression of an ageing population, but is also a medical syndrome which affects around 10% of people over 65 rising to between 25% to 50% of those aged over 85 years old (British Geriatric Society, 2014). They experience being in a state of reduced resilience, increased vulnerability and minor stressors and events can have increased risk of adverse health, functional and wellbeing outcomes (Moody et al, 2018). Frailty has also now become as important as age and underlying health issues in relation to Covid-19 and has implications for morbidity and mortality (Hewitt et al 2020).
