You&#39;ll have the opportunity to build on your knowledge of broad counselling perspectives developed in Year 1, by exploring in greater detail different approaches to counselling. This may include examining cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, humanist-existential, systemic and constructionist approaches. You&#39;ll critically reflect on the implications of these differing perspectives for practice.
During this module you will build on knowledge of broad counselling perspectives developed in year 1 by exploring in greater depth contrasting theoretical approaches to counselling from within the cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, humanist-existential and systemic / constructionist paradigms. You will be provided with opportunities to compare and contrast the chosen approaches, to apply them to case material, and to critically evaluate their usefulness in a range of contexts and with varied client groups. This will form a basis for introducing you to critiques of counselling which will be discussed in greater depth during the third year. Your understanding of methods for researching the effectiveness of counselling will also be developed during the module as we will examine differences between theoretical approaches in the way that they approach research.
