Assessment 1: Practical Skills Assessment

Learners are assessed using the Bossers et al (2007) Competency Based Fieldwork Evaluation (CBFE) for Occupational Therapists in the following competencies:
Practice KnowledgeClinical ReasoningFacilitating Change with a Practice ProcessProfessional Interactions and ResponsibilityCommunicationProfessional DevelopmentPerformance Management
This competency based framework enables progression through the practice placements to be explicitly mapped.
The placement must be passed at 40% to gain credit for this module. Referral on practice is not available, only initial reassessment. This is a professional body requirement.
Further guidance will be provided in the module and practice handbook.

Practice Placement Education

You’ll be introduced to a variety of occupational therapy practice settings through completing a practice placement. This will provide the opportunity for you to develop and apply your practical skills, as well as gain an understanding of appropriate professional behaviour and standards, which you’ll demonstrate during the practice experience. You’ll also examine the nature and development of communication strategies in relation to therapeutic relationships and working with other health and social care professionals. Alongside a practice based educator you’ll develop a learning contract to identify learning outcomes for your placement.
Within a supervised practice environment you will apply, integrate and build upon knowledge, skills and therapeutic techniques learned as a result of other modules on the course.

Compulsory for eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC.

Consider the individuality, well-being and safety of clients, colleagues and self in preparation for the workplace and adheres to the Code of Ethics and Professional conduct (College of Occupational Therapists, 2015).

Interpret knowledge and demonstrates an understanding of professional issues related to occupational therapy.

Recognise client difficulties as a result of occupational disruption.

Identifies and carries out appropriate functional assessments with selected clients.

Manage effective therapeutic relationships with clients and carers in a variety of situations.

Considers the occupational therapy role in relationship to other professions.
