This module aims to provide you with clinical experience of the fundamental techniques used in podiatric care and an understanding of the principles on which therapeutic interventions are based. Through supervised clinical sessions and a four week NHS placement you will focus on the practical application of psychomotor skills including scalpel work, nail care and manufacture of clinical padding, strapping and insoles fabricated in the orthotic laboratory.
The aim of this module is to provide you with clinical experience of the fundamental techniques employed in podiatric care. It thus enables you to gain an understanding of the principles upon which therapeutic interventions are based.
This module will focus on the foundation clinical components of podiatric care for application in the university setting.
The module will also introduce you to the range of health promotion materials and strategies available for  use  in  the  clinical  setting,  the  process  of  planning  health  promotion  programmes  and  the importance of evaluating such interventions will be contextualised in the University and in Placement  in optimising health outcomes for the recipient of podiatric services.
You will initially be introduced to the simulated clinical environment via a range of agreed and regularly updated clinical protocols relating to use of instrumentation including decontamination and sterilisation policies, moving and handling techniques and the safe use of therapeutic agents. You will then progress on to the treatment of patients with a range of podiatric conditions.
Psychosocial issues surrounding health and wellbeing will be contextualised by the application of communication and psychological approaches to health promotion/education strategies.
The use of practical demonstrations by qualified practitioners will serve to support your clinical skills acquisition. In addition the clinical computer facility will be utilised to support and enhance the clinical teaching and self-directed study.
Clinical Practice will enable you to explore the effects of podiatric conditions and understand their presentation and clinical management. This module, in association with Podiatric theory 1 will fulfil the Royal College of Podiatry’s syllabus for qualification as a Podiatry Assistant. This will be formally assessed  in this module by a practical examination after a 4 week placement in an associated NHS placement.

Compulsory for eligibility to apply for HCPC registration and membership of the Royal College of Podiatry.
