This module introduces the principles of midwifery practice in all aspects of pregnancy, childbearing and the postnatal period including care of the newborn. You will explore the midwife’s role, responsibilities and sphere of practice including ethical issues, communication, confidentiality and accurate documentation, which will be assessed in an exam. You will have the opportunity to develop effective communication and demonstrate this through coursework by writing an account based on an example from practice. You will also be introduced to medicines management with safe drug calculation being developed through online tutorials and demonstrated by passing an online exam.
This module will offer you an introduction to the principles underpinning midwifery practice in all aspects of pregnancy, childbearing and the postnatal period including the neonate. This will encompass an exploration of the midwife’s role, responsibilities and sphere of practice. It will introduce you to ethical issues, confidentiality, accurate and contemporaneous documentation and the administration of medicines.  You will have the opportunity to explore, develop and enhance the skills necessary for effective communication in midwifery practice. It is expected that you will utilise all sources of midwifery knowledge including the application of relevant anatomy and physiology.

Principles of Midwifery Care

Apply information derived from their own clinical experience and other sources of midwifery knowledge.

Demonstrate competence in drug calculations.

Explore the midwife’s role, responsibilities and sphere of practice within the provision of midwifery care for women having a normal pregnancy, birth and puerperium, including care of the neonate.

Demonstrate effective communication skills and understanding of the factors that enhance/hinder effective communication with women, their families and colleagues.

Understand the principles of verbal and non-verbal communication and the factors that might enhance / inhibit effective communication within midwifery practice.
