Assessment 1: Written draft

Formative assessment will take the form of draft submissions for the summative portfolio typically comprising: written plans, reflections, comparisons, analyses, presentations outline or actual.  Exact requirements will be provided in detail in the Assessment Brief for this module which can be found in the Module Handbook.  You can expect to receive formative feedback, to inform your summative submission, in writing via the VLE or orally.

Assessment 1: Portfolio

You are to submit a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your developing knowledge, skills and understanding of the theories and practices of Genius Loci and approaches to inquiry that you have experienced in the module.  
The portfolio will typically contain pieces of work, analysis, drawings, reflective accounts/self evaluations etc.

In this module you will focus on place and curriculum development through the specific modality of genius loci/spirit of place Field 1 of the Seven Fields of Practice.
Genius loci seeks to connect to the uniqueness and character of location through the local ecological, cultural and historical contexts in which learning takes place.  In each of the Ruskin Mill Trust (RMT) educational centres, a genius loci survey is conducted on the landscape, including its geology, flora and fauna, and history of human activity.  The survey identifies source materials from the locality and signature crafts that form the basis of a practical skills and land-based curriculum for learners with special educational needs (SEN).
The genius loci survey, based on an approach developed by Goethe (1749-1832), encourages an in-depth and systematic engagement with spirit of place.  You will participate in a genius loci/spirit of place survey, undertaken as a collaborative inquiry, which involves extended ways of perceiving and understanding both the human being and the world.
