Assessment 1: In-Class Test

Timed test. Students choose a day between two dates allocated in advance. Once they have logged on to the submission point they have six hours to complete and submit the test. This approach is appropriate given differing employment patterns of students. The assessment explores knowledge and understanding of key concepts such as inequality, poverty and welfare.

An assignment of 3,000 words exploring the relationship between the individual and society, through focus on a particular issue, to be negotiated between the tutor and student. 6

<p>This module develops your understanding of society. Firstly, it examines social policy issues in society, such as poverty and inequality, and how the state responds to them through ‘welfare’, as well as through ‘rights’ and ‘citizenship’. Your understanding will be examined through a timed test that represents 35% of the overall marks. You will then investigate the formation of identity and social differentiation by examining key sociological concepts such as social class, gender, the family, ethnic identity and crime. You will be invited to explore one of these key topics in an assignment worth 65% of the total marks.</p>

Self Society and Welfare

Understands the role of the state in providing a framework for addressing social issues such as poverty and inequality through welfare.

Demonstrates understanding of key sociological theories and their implications.

Shows understanding of the role of the State in addressing and structuring private and public experience through welfare.

Applies key sociological concepts to study of specific examples of social differentiation and reviews issues associated with social differentiation and differing understandings of its causes.

Understands different key theories around forms of social identity and experience, such as class, gender, education and religion.

Understands key concepts and terms (e.g. identity, socialisation, social process, structure and agency, community, social structure, culture, power) used in analysis of relationship between self and society.
