Assessment 1: Other

Formative assessment will be provided by the academic staff at the weekly meetings with the project team. These meetings will include discussions of progress, problems faced, and contingency planning (where necessary).

Assessment 3: Dissertation/Thesis/Design Thesis (Written)

An individual reflective report detailing the student&#39;s contribution to the work undertaken, and analysing the relative success of the group project.

Dissertation/Thesis/Design Thesis (Written)

Assessment 1: Presentation

A Progress Presentation of 30 minutes duration, to allow the examiners to question the students on their progress and provide feedback on the work completed to date. The main aim of this assessment point is to ensure projects are progressing satisfactorily. This is a group presentation. All students are expected to be present, but it is for the group to decide how to structure and divide the content.

Assessment 2: Project Work

The deliverables created throughout the group project. These may include requirements and design documents, research reports, software, testing documents, etc, as appropriate to the project undertaken. The 50 hours work mentioned in this specification is per student in the group and is intended to reflect the time taken to create and assemble these deliverables.

Project Work

<p>You will be formed into groups of (ideally) three to five developers to work on a challenging software development project which will culminate in the production of a piece of working software. Wherever possible these projects will be for &#39;real&#39; clients, often the companies where the students worked during their industrial placements, although students are also allowed to suggest their own ideas or work on projects related to the various research groups within the department. A member of academic staff will oversee each project, providing guidance and advice where appropriate. The groups will make use of modern software tools and environments in the conduct of their project.</p>

Group Project

Understand the practical issues involved in one of a number of team structures (e.g. Chief Programmer Team).

Analyse and critically evaluate the structure and behaviour of software teams.

Expound the ethical and legal implications of the work of software professionals.

Critically assess the practical and organisational problems of team software development.

Evaluate, select, and adopt appropriate hardware and software platforms and large-scale software development tools (including IDEs, Document Management Systems, and Version Control Systems) as appropriate to the particular project.
