Assessment 1: Other

Students will undertake a series of formative exercises through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. These indicatively include: systematic analysis for topic identification, topic evaluation, referencing, good and bad academic writing styles, case studies on professional, legal and ethical issues, choosing a research method, identifying and assessing risks and building a project plan. Feedback, advice and guidance will be provided for these exercises.

Assessment 2: Written Assignment

A research proposal which demonstrates an understanding of the research process and its application to a given research problem in the context of the course undertaken. This work should follow on from the first assignment, allowing to gain experience in formulating a proposal for a research project, in preparation for the individual project and for continuing with higher-level research degrees.

Assessment 1: Written Assignment

An academic literature review of a contemporary topic relevant to the course undertaken. The review will consist of a reflective account, based on an academic research case study or theme used to frame these reflections. The review will display an appreciation of professional, legal and ethical issues.

<p>This module aims to provide you with skills that are key to helping you become a successful computing researcher or practitioner. You will get the opportunity to study topics including the nature of research, the scientific method, research methods, literature review and referencing. The module aims to cover the structure of research papers and project reports, reviewing research papers, ethical issues (including plagiarism), defining projects, project management, writing project proposals and making presentations.</p>

Effective Research and Professional Practice

Reflect critically on their own personal and professional development.

Identify and delineate the professional, legal and ethical issues raised by computing practice in organisations and in research, as well as the state of the art in a particular computing domain.

Apply the principles of professional behaviour to determine appropriate responses to specific problems provoked by the use of computers within either research or organisational scenarios.

Plan, document, manage, deliver and critically evaluate a rationale for a project in computing (and in the context of the degree being studied) using appropriate methods of research, analysis and investigation, together with an evaluation of scientific risk.
