Activities providing opportunities for formative assessment will generally be integrated into the teaching and learning process and apply to all components of summative assessment.  The nature of the formative assessment tasks used will be at the discretion of the tutor, to include for example, workshop exercises, quizzes, group discussions.

Assessment 1: In-Class Test

Two hours and 30 minutes in-class, open book exam written in the form of a briefing report, based on deep analysis of a known case study, requiring students to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of the role and different approaches of people professionals in supporting organisational and individual performance.
 

Exam

People are the heart of every organisation; they are its greatest resource. Managing and developing people helps businesses and organisations of different kinds and sizes to meet their goals, to remain profitable, sustainable and reputable. However, the role of the HRM professional has evolved considerably in the past 25 years, reflecting changes to ways of working as well as wider socio-economic changes and the use of technologies in organisations. People management is no longer about ‘hiring and firing; it is about how, in this changing world of work, organisations can get the best from people in a way that helps them to flourish and to be resilient. The way that people are managed and supported is directly linked to organisational culture, to organisational performance as well as to motivation, well-being and productivity. Managing and developing people thus takes time and skill.
 
In this module you will be introduced to knowledge and understanding about the ways that HRM policies and practices can promote employee performance and commitment. You will also learn about the importance of the role of the people manager in articulating and facilitating organisational goals, customer needs as well as building relationships that span different professional boundaries.

Managing and developing people

To be able to identify and employ different types of evidence to inform decision-making and strategic direction based on various stakeholder needs. 

Describe and apply key theories and concepts used in HRM to improve organisational performance and engagement as well as different models connecting individual and organisational performance in practice 

Explain the role of people management and HRD across a range of organisational sectors, contexts and structures as well as different tools for building professionalism (rectitude, ethics, vision) and analysing practice  

Review and critically evaluate contemporary themes and research in the fields of Human Resource Management (HRM) and Human Resource Development (HRD) in respect of individual, team and organisational performance and development

Debate and critically evaluate the characteristics of organisational culture, strategy, values and change and the ways in which employees can be purposively integrated through effective HRM policies and practices

To be able to define and illustrate the role and possible interventions of a HR professional working strategically in different sectors (public, private, third), structures (e.g., hierarchies, heterarchies), organisational scales (e.g., SMEs, independently) and in the complex context of change, in pursuit of organisational / business goals
