<p>This module will introduce students to a range of practical and analytical planning techniques used within the logistics industry. The theoretical part of a set of logistics planning techniques is explained in lectures whilst their application is addressed in the computing tutorials. Students will become familiar with the use of industry specific software in the area of optimisation modelling, linear programming, transportation planning, vehicle routing and scheduling algorithms, forecasting, inventory control, project planning, and facility location decisions.  </p>

Planning Techniques for Logistics and Transport Operations

Know and understand different operational techniques needed to support common logistics problems.

Understand the key stages involved in developing models within appropriate computer software.

Appreciate the limitations of these models.

Use a range of established techniques to initiate and undertake critical analysis of information, and to propose solutions to problems arising from that analysis.

Critically evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solve logistics problems both manually and through the use of a computer package.

Effectively analyse the results generated, test alternative scenarios where appropriate and assess their relevance to the project objective.
