Assessment 1: Written practice exercise

Activities providing opportunities for formative assessment will generally be integrated into the teaching and learning process and apply to all components of summative assessment.  The nature of the formative assessment tasks used will be at the discretion of the tutor, to include for example, workshop exercises, quizzes, group discussions.

Assessment 1: Presentation

Students will be required to make a 25-minute presentation on a moot scenario before a judge.

Assessment 2: Practical Skills Assessment

Following the moot presentation, each student will prepare a written reflective portfolio.

<p>Advocacy skills are essential in legal practice, both for solicitors and barristers. Whilst it is recognised that these skills are developed and assessed at the professional level of legal education, the skills for successful mooting are highly desirable at the undergraduate level as they enhance the ability to analyse and debate legal problems. In recognition of this, a mooting module is offered to allow undergraduates to acquire and develop the skills involved. The module draws upon material from core modules of the undergraduate law courses for academic content. As a result, the module also offers undergraduates the opportunity to use learning outcomes from other modules in a more integrated manner</p>

Advocacy

Students will understand the principles of communication and advocacy; 

Students will demonstrate an ability to anticipate and respond clearly to opposing arguments and issues raised by judges.

Students will be able to draft skeleton arguments

Students will know how to recognise the theory underpinning the construction and development of both written and oral arguments

Students will be able to present oral arguments with clarity and in a professional manner

Students will be able to use the law in seeking solutions to problems and preparing and delivering arguments
