<p>This module will enable students to acquire a thorough understanding of the principles of criminal liability, and how these principles are applied to specific offences.  Students will also acquire knowledge of the basis of a defendant’s liability and the skills to apply their knowledge in problem situations.</p>

Principles of Criminal Liability

effectively communicate solutions to problems, arguments and analysis, in a variety of forms.

analyse the facts of a problem, identify which offences are relevant and state and apply the elements (actus reus and mens rea) of the offences to the facts of the problem in order to come to conclusions as to liability.

have acquired knowledge of the main methods of analysis of specific offences into their component elements (the actus reus and mens rea – as studied previously) to establish criminal liability.

know the elements (actus reus and mens rea) of a criminal offence which have to be proved in order to establish criminal liability.

effectively deploy key techniques, concepts and principles of criminal law outside the context in which they were first studied.

analyse problems, identify the appropriate principles of criminal law that arise, and to propose solutions to those problems.

have an understanding of how criminal offences are classified.

use established techniques to critically analyse specific offences into their component elements (the actus reus and mens rea).
