A portfolio of written exercises. Short research-based, analytical, and reflective tasks relating to the historical, critical, and analytical approaches covered in the module and structured as preparation and/or consolidation work for teaching sessions.

A creative response (for example, illustrated seminar, performance, composition, sound recording) in response to a stimulus or research question agreed by the module tutor, plus a commentary of 500 words.

AHM3315 - Explorations in World Musics Final Year

<p>This course will introduce you to styles of music popular around the world in the past and in the present.  It will also introduce analytical tools that will help you conceptualise these styles of music and place them within their cultural and political contexts.  It will draw on a wide range of disciplines, including ethno-musicology, musicology, anthropology, popular music studies, post-colonial studies and history.  Assessment options include: undertaking ethnographic research on a local musical community; or collaborating musically with a musical community; or producing a sound recording of them.</p>

be able to demonstrate an understanding of the research methodologies of ethno-musicology and inter-cultural collaborative practice.

be able to identify, evaluate, and critically discuss world music styles and the ethno-musicological, popular music and musicological issues that surround them.

be able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of a range of world music styles.

be able to initiate, develop and realise a self-guided research project.

be able to either develop strategies for successful ethno-musicological research or cross-cultural musical collaborations or recording of non-western instruments.

be able to construct an articulate, reasoned, well-structured and convincing argument, in spoken and written form, using accurate spelling, grammar, syntax and punctuation, drawing on a range of source materials, and supported by appropriate evidence.

be able to show awareness of the some of the political, cultural and historical issues surrounding world music.
