A submission of the portfolio-in-progress (equivalent to 1000 words).

Assessment 1: Portfolio

A portfolio of several poems written in different forms — length and other details to be negotiated with the tutor.

Assessment 2: Written Assignment

A critical commentary of the portfolio presented demonstrating an informed understanding of form, technique and style and their relationship with intention, theme and content.

Written Assignment

You will develop knowledge and understanding of, and expertise in the art and craft of poetry by studying a representative range of contemporary, modern and pre-Twentieth century poetry and considering how formal, technical and stylistic elements are used in different contexts to enable, effect and complement intention, theme and content.  You will apply their knowledge by writing in a variety of forms, deploying a range of techniques, their practice being informed by the exemplars they have studied.  You will demonstrate theoretical as well as practical learning by critically commenting on your own and others’ work in the light of your study of poetry, technique and form.

The Art of Poetry

develop knowledge of a range of contemporary, modern and pre-20th century poetic texts exemplifying a range of forms and techniques.

develop knowledge and understanding of differing genres and schools of poetry and their differing approaches to form and technique.

be able to write poems in a range of forms using a variety of techniques, matching these to intention, theme and content as appropriate. 

develop knowledge and understanding of the formal and technical aspects of poetry and the relationship of these aspects of the craft to intention, theme and content.

be able to expound, explain and evaluate their work demonstrating an informed understanding of the forms and techniques they have deployed in relation to intention, theme and content, as appropriate.

be able to expound, explain and evaluate their work demonstrating a contextual understanding of contemporary, modern and pre-Twentieth century poetry.
