Formative assessment is ongoing. Students will be given directed writing and other music journalism tasks to complete, guided by the tutor.

Assessment 2: Portfolio

A portfolio consisting of a series of music journalism outputs, incorporating a range of topics and styles. This would typically include reviews, interviews and other examples of music journalism as listed above in section 20, as selected by the tutor.

Assessment 1: Written Assignment

An evaluative report critically examining a key publication, writer or critic in music journalism. Indicative topics could include Rolling Stone, the NME, or Lester Bangs.

In this module, you will develop your music journalism writing skills. You will turn your hand to writing about music and popular culture in a variety of styles, including reviews, features, opinion articles, obituaries and other formats of online and social media journalism. There will be in-depth teaching and guidance not only about how to write, but also how to pitch your work to editors and develop skills as a freelancer. You will also learn about the tradition and history of music journalism, and think critically about its past, present and future.
