Written Assignment

This is a special subject module in which you study aspects of medieval history in depth, focusing on contemporary narrative sources, both historical and literary, and including some consideration of related visual and material sources. You will also engage with the post-medieval representation of the Middle Ages in both academic and popular terms.
This will enable you to gain a better understanding of medieval concepts of the relationship between past and present, as well as between the world and the self. It will also allow you to explore the uses to which these have been put, both during the Middle Ages, and later.

History and Myth: Writing and Re-writing the Middle Ages

be able to display thorough historical knowledge of the processes by which historical narratives were created in the Middle Ages, and of Medievalism as a methodology, making connections between the purposes for which the past was represented in the medieval period, and the purposes for which the medieval past is represented today.

be able to independently evaluate academic and popular interpretations of the medieval past and ask questions of these interpretations, recognising the extent to which specific depictions of the Middle Ages are influenced by the times at which they are made.

be able to articulate ideas and analysis creatively in writing, using appropriate referencing and demonstrating information/digital literacy, and also orally, via the presentation of an original idea for a film/tv show/video game set in the Middle Ages.

be able to originate and conceptualise a complex project including interpreting a significant body of data relating to real world examples of modern depictions of the Middle Ages and their commercial and critical reception.

be able to assess and critique significant bodies of primary material in the form of feature films, tv shows and video games, drawing on appropriate methodologies drawn from Medievalism and other academic areas of popular culture analysis.
