A 1500-word document analysis of three texts from the period.

<p>This module explores the history of English language and literature from c. 700 to c. 1700. Taking a thematic approach it will examine the social, stylistic, political, cultural and economic circumstances within which certain key texts were written as well as their literary and linguistic features. This module will consider the status of literary texts not only as evidence for the development of genres and literary forms, but also as forms of historical and linguistic evidence. Students will explore a range of evidence including material culture and visual representations alongside written sources including poetry, prose, and drama.</p>

Writing the Past

Be able to evaluate differing perspectives and interpretations of key texts from the period. 

Be able to develop a reasoned line of argument and communicate this in writing.

Be able to engage with and analyse literary sources from the era c. 700 – c. 1700 in their historical contexts. 

Be able to effectively communicate in writing, using referencing and demonstrating appropriate digital literacy.

Be able to understand the evolution of English language and literature from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period (c.700– c.1700) and the historical circumstances in which this development took place.

Be able to integrate into a creative context an accurate knowledge and understanding of the period from literary, linguistic, and historical perspectives.
