Synopsis

This module introduces you to the structure of sound within the linguistic system. You will learn all the basics of  articulatory and impressionistic phonetic description, starting from individual sounds and building up to continuous speech. Emphasis is on the development of practical skills in analysing speech.

The module covers: The basic concepts of phonetic description and transcription The basic concepts of phonological categorisation and notation The relationship between speech sounds and the phonological system How to analyse sound systems

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will

understand the basic workings of how speech is produced.

understand the terminology used to describe the various parts of the phonological system
3.
understand the articulatory gestures and phonetic features of speech sounds.
4.
be able to transcribe the basic sound features of speech using appropriate symbols.
5.
be able to produce phonetic descriptions of continuous speech
6.
be able to identify phonological categories.
