Assessment 1: Blog/s

Formative assessment is ongoing. Students will be given directed study tasks to complete in which they use and evaluate digital technologies as applied to journalism and media production, with reflections to be written on their online personal development portfolios. Verbal and written feedback will be given in class by the tutor and peers. 
Students on journalism degrees, and those on other courses opting in to journalism modules, will work towards a formative practical skills passport of core journalism abilities. This consists of a skills audit logged via a checklist and a blog. The skills align with those set out by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council in their accreditation requirements. Skills developed in this module can count towards the passport, which can also form part of a student’s personal development portfolio.

Assessment 2: Project Work

Assessment 2 is a transmedia project of original content incorporating the use of digital technologies. Indicative examples could include the creation of a step-by-step recipe video, music review or video sports report, using a platform’s ‘Stories’ tool, such as Snapchat or Instagram.

<p>This module provides the knowledge for you to gain an understanding of the role of technology in shaping and being shaped by mediated communication, with a particular focus on digital media technologies. The module combines the critical analysis of media technologies with practical skills to use those technologies in the journalism, media and creative industries.</p>
