Assessment 1: Portfolio (including examples)

The formative element of this module is ongoing. Students will be set regular weekly tasks as part of independent study between practical classes for verbal and peer discussion and feedback, including readings, watching examples of video content, and working on their own skills and pieces for formative and summative assessment.
Students on journalism degrees, and those on other courses opting in to journalism modules, will work towards a formative practical skills passport of core journalism abilities. This consists of a skills audit logged via a checklist and a blog. The skills align with those set out by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council in their accreditation requirements. Skills developed in this module can count towards the passport, which can also form part of a student’s personal development portfolio.

Assessment 2: Project Work

Assessment 2 is a video production project in which students will produce and present a video sequence with accompanying supporting paperwork.

Assessment 1 is an individual written pitch of an idea for the Assessment 2 project.

The module introduces you to a range of video formats and technologies: mobile, online, television and video. You will be provided with the essential recording and editing skills necessary to produce a video output, and to understand the language and concepts required to critically evaluate video content.

Digital Video Production

Examine the effectiveness of video platforms as methods of communication with a specific audience.

Employ digital recording hardware to record video.

Appraise key techniques of creating video output, such as interviews, variety of shots, screen orientation, use of music, scripted voiceover and presentation.

Demonstrate technical and creative skills in planning, recording and editing video for use on TV, online and on mobile devices.

Recognise appropriate vocabulary and terminology related to video production.
