A report on various perspectives and definitions of sustainability, sustainable architecture, environmental concerns and current policy frameworks to drive the sustainability agenda.  This includes a comprehensive evaluation report for a given design, having considered various sustainability evaluation tools, indicators and frameworks. Complexity and controversy of current suitability agenda should be reflected upon.

THA1040 - Advanced Digital Detailing and Sustainability

Part-1: Sustainable design and construction
Carbon emissions, sustainability and energy efficiency are current key concerns worldwide. Construction industry and the built environment are among the biggest contributors to carbon emissions and consume significant amounts of energy on a daily basis; hence considering environmental impact and driving the sustainability agenda are high within the construction industry agenda. Within this context, one of the contemporary roles of the Architectural Technologist and Building Surveyor is to promote sustainability in new construction designs and to improve the existing building stock where possible and appropriate. Accordingly, this part of the module will aim to further develop your ability to comprehensively recognise the principles of sustainability in construction and their application in design and construction. With that, you will be able to reinforce and appreciate your understanding of the relationship between sustainable design and construction processes.
Part-2: Lean integrated project management in construction 
This part of the module covers Lean Construction theory and practice. Lean is presented as an innovative waste and value-based approach to managing construction projects. You will explore the issues of managing flow and value generation through construction projects. The concept of waste, aligned with strategies for reduction of waste across the different project stages is also discussed. The module will further examine different lean methods and tools, which can be applied across the lifecycle of building projects, including the Last Planner System of Production Control and Visual Management, among others.

Debate about complex and controversial aspects of sustainable building design and construction

Appraise various policies and regulations driving the sustainability agenda and evaluate implications of policy frameworks for building a more sustainable built environment.

Demonstrate a sound knowledge on principles of sustainability evaluation tools such as BREEAM and its impact on the construction decision-making (such as materials selection)

Recognise lean construction project management approaches and the benefits of lean in supporting complex projects and sustainability

Produce indicative evaluations to various designs using sustainable indicators such as BREEAM

Evaluate the diverse strategies and tools associated with lean in design and production.
