Assessment 1: Portfolio

A Theory as Practice Portfolio comprising:
8000 word equivalent project with written and design elements, broken down into 4000 word equivalent essay and 4000 word equivalent design outcome. The Theory as Practice portfolio will be illustrated and APA referenced, with a bibliography of key texts.

Welcome to Theory as Practice 1. This module introduces you to vital discourses and debates surrounding the history, influences, production and critical reception of visual communication. It also introduces you to academic writing, and approaches to research across a spectrum of topics relating to visual communication, as well as methods of critical analysis. The module explores and introduces contemporary theory as practice, with reference to a wide range of contemporary and historic artefacts, images, films and texts. You will learn to recognise and understand key conventions and contexts and create concepts useful to both your studio practice and for your theory assignments. Through these assignments you will develop and then test your confidence and ability to demonstrate your understanding of, and engagement with, contemporary practice and visual, material and digital cultures. This module will help you to build confidence in information gathering, theoretical discussion and comparative analysis of diverse subjects and themes, within a written academic format.
