Assessment 1: Portfolio

The production of a portfolio containing a body of work which responds to tutor set studio themes including completed artefacts/assets/environments/reels supported by working prototypes, studies and documentation of exploratory processes.
Oral presentation (10 minutes) and discussion of portfolio work supported by presentations of completed artefacts and proposals for these via research documentation and communication.

Portfolio

The Foundation Studio is delivered across one term of the first year of study. You will develop a body of work in response to a studio theme.  This is defined and structured by Module Tutors to promote an exploration of discipline specific issues and the potential of Graphic Design &amp; Animation, as independent and converging practices, through the development of experimental practice and proposals for the exploration of: the image, image and text, visual grammar and the visual field, typographic form, multimedia materials, photography and motion graphics, animation and interactive media environments, as appropriate to your practice.
You will be encouraged to apply technical, theoretical and contextual skills from adjacent modules. Strategies for conceptualisation, critique and the identification of appropriate methods of communication, research and production will form the central focus of this module.
The Foundation Studio provides you with a vehicle to explore creative processes relating to contexts from the screen-based to the site specific, as well as from printed to interactive and online formats. The module introduces a broad holistic approach that encompasses diverse and interdependent areas of practice. The module aims to support the exploration, expression and communication of ideas in a variety of forms appropriate to conceptual and aesthetic intention, as well as introducing constraints of production. Support with equipment and workshops as well as industry standard graphics, illustration, animation and interactive media software is available through studio seminars and tutorials.
The module aims to promote critically reflective professional practice.  Assignments focus on portfolio development through the development of working practices that are reflective and reflexive.  In this the module is intrinsically linked to all modules within the degree programme and is explicitly serving Personal Development Planning aims.
