One piece of formative assessment will be included. This will be in the form of oral feedback reviewing the ongoing formation of a portfolio of design work. This will take place in a term by means of either ongoing observation and feedback of performance in taught sessions, or via PDP tutorials.

The Design Studio 1 module is delivered within the first year of study. You will develop a body of work in response to a studio theme that accommodates aspects of your course specialism and its professional practice. 
This module will introduce you to the creative thinking processes and tools to undertake good quality research in order to identify and fulfil the needs of the client using 2D and 3D Design and their application through project work.  Design projects will enable you to explore and develop design proposals using a range of methods, practical skills and specialist knowledge. The module will introduce studio practice and provide experience and techniques in realising either complex or open briefs depending on context.
You will be encouraged to apply technical, theoretical and contextual skills from adjacent modules. Strategies for conceptualisation, critique and the identification of appropriate methods of communication, research and production will form the central focus of this module.
The Design Studio 1 module provides you with a vehicle to explore creative processes relating to contexts from the intangible screen-based to the tangible site specific, as well as interactive and online formats. The module introduces a broad holistic approach that encompasses diverse and interdependent areas of practice. The module aims to support the exploration, expression and communication of ideas in a variety of forms appropriate to conceptual and aesthetic intention, as well as introducing constraints of production. Support with equipment and workshops as well as industry standard graphics, illustration, motion and interactive design software is available through studio demonstrations and tutorials.
The module aims to promote critically reflective professional practice.  Assignments focus on portfolio development through the development of working practices that are reflective and reflexive. In this the module is intrinsically linked to all modules within the degree programme and is explicitly serving Personal Development Planning aims.
