Formative assessment will be comprised of a mock multi choice online test covering the building technology module streams (i.e., structure, building fabric design and environmental design). Feedback will be given on this test to indicate strengths and weaknesses to inform study for the summative test.

The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to the principles and practices of building technology, digital technologies, communication and representation in the context of architecture and construction. This module consists of four parallel strands:
Structures
The module will explore the fundamental concepts of structural mechanics, including forces and equilibrium, the assessment of stress and deformation (strain) in simple elements, mechanical properties of materials, structural analysis methods and structural design principles.
Buildings Fabric Design
Building materials will be discussed in relation to their properties and their implications for design and construction, exploring and exemplifying different assemblies, construction techniques  and building systems that can be used to achieve safe, environmentally sound and aesthetic buildings. Common failures in materials and assemblies will be highlighted, as well as an introduction to civil engineering and groundworks.
Environmental Design
The module will discuss environmental science, exploring principles of sustainable design and construction, as well as thermal comfort and bioclimatic design. This extends to physiological (and psychological), visual and acoustic comfort, and the health and well being of the building occupants. You will be introduced to how responsive design (both passive and interactive) can be utilised to provide the internal conditions necessary for comfort.
Digital Communication
You will be introduced to a range of architectural &amp; construction design and visualisation skills, including the use of both manual and digital graphic and modelling techniques. Digital technologies will be discussed focusing on the applications of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and emerging technologies. The module will offer an opportunity to also develop presentation and communication skills, supporting your personal development.
All of the above topics will be considered in relation to sustainable design necessary for protecting internal, local and global environments for both current and future generations.

Building Technology and Digital Communication 

Analyse and evaluate basic issues of sustainability in connection with use and specification of materials, assemblies and systems.

Demonstrate an understanding of environmental design aspects, as well as knowledge of sustainable design and construction principles.

Demonstrate a knowledge of building materials and construction processes, as well as evaluate basic principles, elements and techniques of good construction, detailing and material specification.

Be able to critically appraise different structural systems, material specification, detailing and appropriateness of alternative choices in environmental design strategies relating to the design of simple constructions.

Demonstrate an understanding of the environmental design aspects, sustainable design, human comfort principles and the concept and practical applications of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and emerging technologies in the built environment.

Be able to create building models and manage digital information using BIM and other digital technology applications which are relevant to specific disciplines in architecture and construction.

Demonstrate knowledge of structural elements of buildings and an understanding of structural mechanics, including forces and equilibrium, the assessment of stress and deformation (strain) in simple elements, mechanical properties of materials, structural analysis methods and structural design principles.
