Assessment 1: Oral Assessment

An individual presentation (10 minutes) evaluating the roles, responsibilities and skill requirements of Architectural Technologist, Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors or Construction Project Managers (depending on the selected course) and their interaction with other professionals in the industry. As a part of this, a self-reflective PDP is to be prepared based on a SWOT analysis to identify individual development priorities.

A written report addressing the learning outcomes related to the sections on construction business at industry level, project level and regulatory level. 

An overall understanding about how the construction industry works is essential for all students who perceive a career in the construction industry. This understanding lays the foundation for you to, not only recognise your role within the construction process but also to recognise and appreciate the work of other professionals within the industry. You will also be introduced to contract law and regulatory frameworks, including the workings of the English legal system. Within this remit, the scope of this module is to introduce the overall construction business to you. The module content is structured into four distinctive but interrelated areas, namely, business at the industry level, business at the project level, business at the individual level and business at the regulatory level.
Business at the industry level: 
Within this part of the module, you are presented with industry-level details such as the nature of the construction industry and its place within the national economy; roles, responsibilities and business perspectives of different types of clients (investors, developers, public authorities, etc.); construction from the investment point of view and from the social responsibility point of view; and national and international priorities related to construction such as sustainability and energy efficiency. Further, this part also discusses the roles and responsibilities of the construction industries in making the built and human environment resilient to natural and man-made disasters.
Business at the project level
This part of the module focuses on the construction project lifecycle. The content within this part will cover the lifecycle of a typical construction project; types of construction projects; project stakeholders (client, the design team, contractor, etc.), their roles and responsibilities; project success factors; team working; organisational and management structures of construction projects.
Business at the individual level 
This part of the module is dedicated to explore the individual roles of construction professionals with specific emphasis given to the role of Architectural Technologists, Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors and Construction Project Managers. Basic skill requirements of construction professionals are discussed here and having identified skill requirements, you are expected to create your Personal Development Plan (PDP) within this module.
Business at the regulatory level 
This part of the module focuses on English Law and the role of judicial precedent &amp; statutory interpretation. The content within this part will also introduce contract law (agreement; consideration and contractual intention).

Construction Business and Law

Develop competence in the use of a range of legal (and sometimes non-legal) and statutory research sources, in both paper and electronic format.

Demonstrate a knowledge of the nature, processes, basic operational parameters and success factors of construction projects and the roles of related professions and professional bodies. 

Demonstrate the ability to communicate, both in writing and orally, in a professional, ethical and unambiguous fashion, and to present illustrated presentation material/reports.

Discuss the life-cycle of a typical contract and explain the most important contractual doctrines.

Apply appropriate contractual principles and authoritative rules of law to a range of problem scenarios and provide logical solutions.

Assess roles and business objectives of construction clients and other project stakeholders and appraise their impact on the construction industry.

Recognise the nature of the construction industry in the national and the international contexts, its economic and environmental sustainability impact, and global priorities and challenges. 

Investigate different roles and responsibilities and skills requirements of different professionals within the construction industry and identify your areas for improvements to succeed in your selected pathway (following the PDP process).
