Assessment 2: Oral presentation/assessment

The summative assessment is based on the skills acquired during the formative assessment. The students will be asked to prepare a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation on a current infectious disease in the style of a press conference/public information event to the rest of the group with a follow on ‘Ask the researcher’ question. This will be based on their skill sets acquired during the module and demonstrates the student’s knowledge, preparation of a presentation, presentational skills and ability to answer questions from an audience logically and comprehensively. The assessment will be based on presentation contents, presentation visuals, presentation style and response to questions.

The students will be given a formative written assessment in the form of a case study of an infectious disease assigned to them which they will need to investigate utilising various online sources. Individual written feedback will be provided to students via the university VLE.

<p>This module will cover several aspects of infectious disease, including the underlying biology, epidemiology and evolution of pathogens in relation to host immune response in humans. The diagnosis of disease, disease monitoring and novel approaches to treatment will also be covered in addition to emerging technologies to combat multidrug resistance in bacteria and expediated antiviral and vaccine development for emerging viruses.</p>
