This module is designed to build up scientific communications skills, develop teamwork skills and provide an opportunity to research a geographical topic in depth.  The topics are selected so that geographical principles can be investigated and reported by a group.  Students choose a general topic in groups of about four. Each group jointly prepares a15-minute PowerPoint presentation, focusing on a key recent (last five years) research paper. Members of each group then conduct individual self-directed study on a focused research topic area aided by tutorials on literature searching, interpretation of the scientific literature and abstract writing, working to produce a 3,000-word literature review based on their findings.
The group presentations are allocated 30% of the module mark, and the literature review 70% of the module mark, of which 10% is for a draft of the review on which feedback is provided.
