Group and computer-based data analysis project and presentation of the results as a group oral presentation.

This module further develops general research skills including writing, presentations, using statistical analysis and elements relevant to the final year research projects. Teamwork skills are promoted in a group data analysis project, including statistical analysis of the data and group presentation in one term. In the other term, the students have an opportunity to research a biological topic in depth and building on the skills learned in year one to write an essay on the topic. 
Personal tutorial meetings promote employability skills including further development of the CV and Personal Development Planning as well as a continuation of enterprise and employability skills through the tutorial programme. Research ethics and health and safety aspects are also considered in preparation for final year research (capstone) project.

know how the CV and PDP guide career outlook and options.

be able to extract the salient points from an original research paper.

be able to prepare and deliver a presentation to a standard suitable for a scientific meeting; be prepared to explain the significance of the science to a non-scientist and non-specialist.

be able to complete COSHH and fulfil GLP and research ethics for final year projects.

know principles and approaches in data analysis, including statistical insights into data.

know ethics in biological research and the Ethics Panel and Committee procedures with respect to research projects.

know the scientific literature: how developments in the biosciences are reported and established.

be able to explain the procedures and report on the data analysis performed, including interpretation and significance of the results.

be able to interrogate the scientific literature, critically assess it, appreciating the limitations of the science and compile a review, using accurate citation and understanding how to avoid plagiarism.

be able to develop their team working skills in diverse teams, appreciate the advantages and difficulties of team-work whilst negotiating with their peers.

know Health and safety requirements and COSHH assessment in preparation for final year research projects.
