This module, together with SHC4039 Design Project 2, aims to: give experience of the design of a process from the conceptual stage through to detailed design; apply and integrate chemical engineering skills acquired from other modules; encourage a creative approach to chemical engineering design; gain experience of working in a team; gain experience of the presentation of technical material in extended written reports and orally.
This Design Project 1 module covers the initial Part 1 Design Proposal and the Individual Detailed Design.  The peer- and self-evaluated Teamwork component is also allocated for assessment purposes to this module.  The Design Project 2 module complements this module with the Part 3 Consolidated Design, Group Presentation and Individual Oral Examination and Supervisor Assessment, and with taught and examined material covering process integration, sustainability, management and ethics.  The supervisor-evaluated Teamwork component is also allocated for assessment purposes to that module.


15.	Professional Body Requirements	From the IChemE Accreditation Guide: “In order to meet the learning outcomes associated with the systems approach, the design portfolio must include a major design exercise which addresses the complexity issues arising from the interaction and integration of the different parts of a process or system.  It is expected that this major project will be undertaken by teams of students and that this will contribute significantly to the development of the students’ transferable skills such as communication and team working.”  A minimum of 30 UK credits of Design Project work is required for IChemE accreditation

be able to employ process simulation software, where appropriate, to model and optimise a chemical process or sub-system.

be able to describe and explain the principal successive steps required in the commencement of process design.

be able to present in written form the process design, justifying design assumptions, decisions and approaches. 

be able to use and interrelate core chemical engineering principles (mass and energy balance, fluid flow, heat transfer, thermodynamics, chemical reactors and physical separations) in order to design plant items.

be able to creatively apply the steps required in the commencement of process design, including marketing and technological contexts relevant to the choice of process and location.

be able to justify the choice of process for a particular product.
