Individual report on a quality control assignment. The student will analyse a given production case study and report on the required measurements and process control system, considering technical and commercial factors.

Individual report on the control of a production case study. The student will work individually under the guidance of a group tutor to design, program and implement a control system for a given case study.

Taught material will contribute an element every week to the SAIL programme (Score As I Learn) submitted via the VLE platform. 11 x 15 minutes weekly assignments (quizzes). Each assignment (quiz) will be worth 3%. Taking the best 8 out of 11 scores.

<p>This module gives you an introduction to the main types of manufacturing processes and the systems used to control them. You will learn about control systems for flexible manufacturing systems and quality control through dimensional measurement. You will get an overview of different production processes such as additive, subtractive, assembly and forming. This provides context for the remainder of the module. You will then explore three control systems in greater detail: Control systems related to computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) manufacturing machines; Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs); and Inspection and Quality control. The module will give to the ability to apply your analytical learning to solve a logic control problem and devise a quality control system. These are the vital skills that manufacturing industry needs.</p>

Understand and appraise the main methods of dimensional metrology, measurement uncertainty, methods of inspection of manufactured parts and the use of this data in quality control.

Devise a measurement strategy for the quality control of a production line.

Communicate designs of production control systems and appraise their effectiveness.

Design, implement and validate a logic control system for a production control problem.

Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the different types of manufacturing processes, the machine types used in them and analysis of the equipment and software used in their control.
