Formative assessment and feedback will be provided through group work updates and interim reporting where applicable. EnABLE group exercises will offer formative assessment and feedback in a range of ways. Informal peer to peer feedback will be promoted within groups and between groups at the end of the exercise. In addition, facilitators and experts will offer feedback on interim performance on planning and construction exercises. Verbal feedback will also be available as part of the competition or presentation expected at the end of the exercise.

Taught material will contribute an element every week to the SAIL programme (Score As I Learn) submitted via the VLE platform. 11 x 15 minutes weekly assignments (quizzes). Each assignment (quiz) will be worth 3%. Taking the best 8 out of 11 scores.

<p>This module aims to provide you with an understanding of material behaviour in a range of environments and to develop your ability to analyse solid objects subjected to static loads in the light of this knowledge. You will learn to understand and explain the behaviour of materials at a microscopic level and appreciate the relationship between this scale of behaviour and the properties of bulk material. You will cover the classical techniques of stress and strain analysis that allow component behaviour to be related to material behaviour. Your understanding will allow you to select appropriate material and component characteristics for particular operating conditions in a range of representative environments.</p>

Analysis of Materials

Apply scientific and mathematical principles to the analysis of geometrically simple engineering components subjected to static loads.

Appreciate the differences between ceramics metals polymers and composites in terms of functional properties related to microstructure.

Assess the use of materials within components subjected to specific operating conditions.

Understand how the underpinning principles of static analysis can be extended to two and three dimensions.

Know and understand the behaviour of typical engineering materials, across a range of functional environments.

Work as an effective team member to generate and present a solution to an engineering challenge.

Understand materials testing and relation to function, performance and failure in the field.
