Formative assessment and feedback will be provided through group work updates and interim reporting where applicable. EnABLE group exercises will offer formative assessment and feedback in a range of ways. Informal peer to peer feedback will be promoted within groups and between groups at the end of the exercise. In addition, facilitators and experts will offer feedback on interim performance on planning and construction exercises. Verbal feedback will also be available as part of the competition or presentation expected at the end of the exercise.

Unseen, open book, online exam that will cover topics on thermodynamics, turbomachinery and flow in pipes/ducts.

Laboratory. A short report on practical investigation of a vapour compression refrigeration system. The practical investigation aims to allow students to study the performance of a vapour compression refrigeration system at different operating conditions using a refrigeration apparatus.

Taught material will contribute an element every week to the SAIL programme (Score As I Learn) submitted via the VLE platform. 11 x 15 minutes weekly assignments (quizzes). Each assignment (quiz) will be worth 3%. Taking the best 8 out of 11 scores.

<p>This module will introduce you to the essential principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics and their application to the analysis, performance prediction and design of thermo-fluids engineering systems. You will also study the scientific principles of thermo-fluids engineering systems such as heat engines, refrigerators, turbo-machines, heat exchangers, fluid conveyance and flow control systems are considered showing how their operation and utilisation may be optimised.</p>

Thermofluids

Understand the basic mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation, and know the Nusselt, Reynolds and Prandtl number relationships to evaluate convective heat transfer coefficients.

Know, and be able to apply, thermofluids science concepts to engineering systems such as pipe/duct flows, expansion and compression processes, heat engines, refrigerators.

Apply the energy conservation principle for steady flow engineering systems and calculate the flow head loss in pipes/ducts and flow control devices.

Apply Euler’s equation and velocity diagrams for turbo machines and evaluate pump-performance based on the principle of dimensional similarity.

Design, and evaluate the performance of, heat exchangers using the NTU method.

Supply the lift and drag coefficients for evaluating the fluid forces in engineering systems.

Work as an effective team member to generate and present a solution to an engineering challenge.
