Taught material will contribute an element every week to the SAIL programme (Score As I Learn) submitted via the VLE platform. 11 x 15 minutes weekly assignments (quizzes). Each assignment (quiz) will be worth 3%. Taking the best 8 out of 11 scores.

A group assignment and report to gather data about a specific vehicle, with individual summary of differences between calculated and published data. (Wordcount per student).

<p>This module will introduce you to suspension, steering and braking systems for ground vehicles. Various systems, associated components and characteristics will be discussed and analysed. The analysis is taken to the point where leading design parameters are calculated. Forces exerted on a vehicle during linear motion are analysed. Drivetrain requirements are established and the characteristics of power plant and transmissions are studied. Engine performance is examined in terms of fuel consumption and other performance related factors. Acceleration and braking performance are analysed for different vehicle configurations, performance requirements and operating conditions, enabling you to understand the performance and handling of the vehicle.</p>

Vehicle Handling and Performance Prediction

Use established techniques to analyse the forces acting on a vehicle in linear motion including analysis of the acceleration and braking performance of a vehicle in linear motion and describe and comment upon the results in a critical manner.

Analyse fuel consumption for a vehicle under steady state conditions, communicate the results and make judgements based upon current research.

Have a coherent understanding of the need for certain transmission components, know the characteristics of power plants and transmissions.

Calculate leading design parameters for a steering and braking system and critically evaluate the results.

Have a systematic understanding of the forces acting on a vehicle in linear motion including the operational requirements of braking systems and the factors which influence the directional control of a vehicle.

Understand the requirements, and detailed knowledge of the principal features, characteristics and established techniques to calculate leading design parameters of suspension systems and tyres.
