Written Assignment

This module will examine how offence locations relate to the lives of offenders. You will explore the significance of closeness of the crime locations to key places in the offender’s life and the geometry of the distribution of the offences. You will also study propinquity (the distance offenders travel), morphology (whether investigators can predict the offenders home area), variations in criminality and offender geography and geographical profiling systems.
You will consider how offence locations relate to the lives of offenders. The significance of closeness of the crime locations to key places in the offender’s life, notably his/her home or base and the pattern or overall geometry of the distribution of the offences, being a reflection of internal mental maps of possible offence locations, will be explored. You will also study the importance of narrative theory in shaping criminals ‘mental maps’ as well as geographical profiling systems.

Critically compare and contrast behavioural and cognitive approaches to understanding criminal geography .

Appreciate the range of factors and processes governing the geographical activity of offending populations .

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Investigative Psychology principles and research in relation to offender spatial behaviour. 

Demonstrate a systematic understanding of what is meant by the terms ‘Propinquity’ and ‘Morphology’ and their application in understanding and modelling criminal spatial behaviour .

Identify some of the key factors which may influence an offender’s crime location choices  .

Demonstrate a systematic and critical understanding of what ‘Geographical Profiling’ involves using GOP systems like Dragnet.   

Use and apply Investigative Psychology principles for the purposes of investigation.  
